Troubleshooting a Portable Air Conditioner

If you find your air conditioner out of order, it can leave you hot in more ways than one. Once you've determined what's wrong, getting the unit running right may be just a matter of making one or two small repairs.

Unit won't run

Power is off

Check wall plug. Check circuit breaker.

Bad thermostat

Call a professional.

A/C unit won't cool air

Dirty filter

Remove grill and clean filter.

Clogged evaporator coils or clogged condenser coils

Vacuum coils. If necessary, scrub coils lightly with old toothbrush. Take care not to bend fins.

Shrub or other obstacle blocking air flow

Trim obstacle or move air conditioner to other location.

Bad fan motor

Call a professional.

Bad compressor

Call a professional.

Unit won't blow air

Bad fan motor

Call a professional.

Machine leaks

Drain plug clogged, preventing condensed water from escaping

Clear clog with screwdriver.

Improper installation

Unit should be installed so it tilts slightly to the outside to let water drain.

Ice forms on coils

Dirty air filter

Clean filter.

Outside temperature below 60°F (16°C)

Defrost the coil by turning selector switch to Fan position. Let run until ice melts.

Rattling noise inside unit

Condenser fan or evaporator fan is loose, hitting coils or housing

Remove cabinet, reposition fan and tighten screw at centre of fan.
